xKatan, a plain-woven fabric, is crafted solely from pure silk strands, renowned for its exquisite beauty and luxurious feel. It is typically used for the warp of light fabrics and is composed of two twisted threads. The women of the Mughal dynasty were renowned for their use of Katan to create exquisitely embroidered garments. The royal women used to use Katan to decorate intricately crafted clothing because of its robust nature and royal appearance. The yarn for katan silk, as it is known locally in Varanasi, is made by twisting several silk filaments, giving it a particularly robust and long-lasting quality. It is woven by hand with a weft and warp made entirely of silk.
